AFRICAN CELEBRATIONS

For my artist, I was most inspired by Wangechi and her use of sculptures. The way she has adorned these bronze Kenyan statues to resemble African goddesses or otherworldly beings is some of my favorite uses of storytelling.

Looking to what my artwork actually is, it's quite simple. The background of the image is a composition of the flags of multiple African countries. In the foreground, I made PNGs of my favorite statues of Wangechi's The Seated.

The reason I chose this form of imagery is also quite simple; representation. The way Wangechi has made such powerful and attention-demanding imagery in The Seated series was so mesmerizing to me. I feel as though many Westerners have a dull perception of what African nations are actually like and tend to forget how beautiful and rich their cultures are. Wangechi adorning these statues with traditional Kenyan garb and jewelry was the perfect way to depict this sentiment. While Wangechi is honoring her Kenyan roots, I feel as though this message can be applied to many African cultures.
